PROJECT X 0.67 INSTRUCTIONS 11
Final details |

These are the things best saved for last otherwise they may get knocked off!
Propeller and rudder Tap a short length of brass rod and screw it into the back of the propeller. Push the completed assembly into the hole in the end of the keel. Push the rudder post up into the bearing behind it as shown.

Funnel The funnel is simply a length of 20mm diameter brass tube. The photo shows the funnel descending to the top of the boiler; however I later shortened it to sit on top of the brass dome.
The ring around the funnel's base is turned from 25mm diameter brass rod. The photo shows it before being parted off. Because the funnel has a slight angle you'll need to file the inside of the ring to make it fit correctly.
Mask off the top 5mm of the funnel and spray the rest gloss white.
Assemble the ring and funnel, taking care not to scratch the paint, and glue them onto the copper dome, ensuring that the funnel is vertical fore and aft and has the correct rearward lean.

Ventilators These are commercially-available model boat parts chosen to match the plans. Shorten and angle the bases until they sit vertically on the foredeck at the correct height.Fill the bases with plastic filler and set a short length of stout wire into the centre. This will locate them easily later. Spray the ventilators gloss white. The brass rings at the base are made from the surrounds of 10mm flangeless portholes, filed out inside to achieve the angle. Mark the centre positions of the ventilators accurately on the foredeck and drill a hole on each to take the stout wire. Then glue the ventilators in place, making sure they are vertical and aligned with each other.
Flagstaffs These are commercially-available model boat parts chosen to match the plans. Each one is mounted on a small disk of pearwood; note that the rear disk is thicker because it's stepped over the coaming (see flag photo below). Glue the disks onto the decks, and then glue on the flagstaff bases and flagstaffs.
Mooring posts Find the two spare mooring posts you made earlier. Shorten and angle the bases until they sit vertically on the foredeck at the correct height. Drill a small hole centrally in the base of each to take a short length of stout wire. Mark the centres of the mooring posts accurately on the foredeck and drill holes to take the stout wire. Then glue the posts in place, making sure they are vertical and aligned with each other.
Flag If desired you can rig the rear flagstaff to take a flag. I chose a St George's Cross as it makes a nice change from the usual red or white ensign and matches the colour of the hull. It's rigged with a small cleat superglued near the base; at the top I tied on a tiny brass eyelet left over from another kit. You could just tie the thread around the top of the flagstaff if preferred. |
